Work is progressing along with the Pendlebury LH Project in St. Andrews. Its sad to report that former Civic Trust member Alanna Baird is no longer involved with the lighthouse restoration project. She has moved on to Ottawa leaving the project in the hands of Barry Murray and other local members.

Recent work: The lantern room, currently at the St. Andrews Community College, is in varying stages of repair. The window sections have been cleand /sand blasted..and are awaiting a blacksmiths "touch ". The roof is in storage awaiting some funding to finish restoration work. St. Andrews Civic trust is currently looking for a lantern/light appropriate for their building. If you know of any old one kicking around please get in contact with them at: bemurray@nb.sympatico.ca

Things are progressing along nicely with the 1833 Pendlebury Lighthouse Project in St. Andrews NB. Last weekend a group of volunteers helped prepare for the demolition of the old Lighthouse Restaurant on Patrick street but first they had to board up and save the part of the old Lightkeepers Cottage that was incorporated into the former restaurant at some point in the past. Work accomplished so far includes putting in a plywood wall for the protection from the weather for what was is the front of the cottage (sea side) - and has been framed in to take center door with transom window, and two side windows, as per the old photos. The chimney/fireplace is not original, but will probably stay. The foundation for the central chimney is intact underneath - I was crawling around under on Sat. to support some of the front floor. There are plans for this Friday to cut the floor joists of the restaurant to separate it from the cottage, again a volunteer workforce of Board members and a few others. Demolition should take place tue. or wed. of next week.

Thanks to Bob Estes (former owner), Dave Nutter (volunteer), Allan Fiander, Barry Murray, Jeff Gauley, Alanna Baird for labour, Jane Hamilton (board members) and Liz Murray (volunteer) for sustenance, The Red Whale Coffee for coffee, and Carole Barton (board member) for errands and cleanup. Also special thanks to Vonda Plomp for crossing union lines and helping "the enemy". It was a day's hard work, and we got an awful lot done, as you can see. The photo that shows the two patio doors is the west side of the building, the plywood wall is the east side, the chimney is the north wall, and the two washroom doors are the south wall. Thanks to Alanna Baird for the update and to Barry Murray for the photos.

The Pendlebury LH project is finally going ahead now, the LH Restaurant property on Patrick Street is going through town council for final approval of the subdivision, and the vacant lot has been sold. This means that St. Andrews Civic Trust will finally take possession of the land the lighthouse sits on, and, the restaurant will be demolished saving the old keepers cottage that is currently within it. At one point in the past the cottage was incorporated another larger building. Hopefully a volunteer work crew will be there this coming weekend to close in the sea facing wall of the cottage, before demolition of the restaurant. Also some gentle prying apart to separate the buildings. Demolition equipment is due for next Tuesday, the 15th of November.

Pendlebury LH Presentation

In early February St. Andrews Civic Trust, the preservation group restoring the Pendlebury LH, made a presentation to St. Andrews Town Council on how they can help save an important piece of the town's maritime heritage. In esense they asked the council for their approval of the trust's restoration plan for the 1833 colonial era lighthouse. What the town would do is to fill in the ramp area at the end of Partrick street so a turnaround could be made for cars. As well they would provide nearby parking spaces for visitors to the lighthouse. As the restoration is still in its early stages the trust is looking at all aspects of the restoration before any major work is done. That includes seeing what rezoning or variances need to be changed by the town to accomodate this project. Also the costs involved in constructing the turnaround area and parking area is too be looked at. It was made clear that the trust was not looking for a commitment at this time but for approval in principal from the town council. The approval in principal was felt necessary in order for the trust to proceed with spending money on a surveyed plan. As of the last council meeting the town council has yet to discuss the plan by the trust but it was felt that a majority of councillors and the Deputy Mayor supported the proposal. The plan has now been forwarded by Councillor Kevin Kiley to the committee level for further discussion.

Things are progressing along with the restoration of the Pendlebury Lighthouse lantern room that is currently at the NBCC St. Andrews Welding Dept.

According to St. Andrews Civic Trust member Alanna Baird the sandblasting of the wrought iron has begun to remove the many years of rust. To make it easier, some pieces have been removed for sandblasting.
"In the images you will see front and back views of a before and after of the glass stops (the piece of metal that holds the glass pane in place), a C shaped piece that is a window frame (two C's make a whole window), and inside the lantern there is a complete window up on the sawhorses with a portion cleaned. The grey is the clean metal, the rust is the rust."

"It's taking a bit of work to get a system going, but Butch is helping me work out the bugs. We have ordered an inline air filter to remove water from the air, it's clogging the sand after a bit of time. We should have that next week, and I'll be able to do more. Hopefully once we have the system working, I can get some students to help. Meanwhile, Don Pell can come down next week and take a look at some of the bare pieces and we can begin taking steps towards restoration."

The restoration of the Pendlebury LH Cupola is proceeding along.

Photo by Barb Raynor, St. Croix Courier

The restoration of the cupola is proceeding along quite nicely ever since it was removed in August of this year. Cleaning of the wrought iron is the first step and to see if it can be cleaned or more likelt replaced in many places. The welding department at NBCC St. Andrews has volunteered to do the work. Its expected the work will take a minimum of a year, this all depends of monies received by St. Andrews Civic Trust for the restoration of this light. It also depends on how much work(man hours) that will be required to restore this light. Restoration on the base, or tower, of the lighthouse has yet to start. The pier the light previously stood on also needs to be rebuilt before it can be placed back on it. The lighthouse was donated to Civic Trust in early 2002 by the owners of the Lighthouse Restaurant. there are rumours that the restaurant may be sold soon and the property at the end of the wharf could then be developed into a nice lighthouse development showcasing the whole harbour area.

Pendlebury LH Lantern Room

The lantern room of the St. Andrews or Pendlebury LH will be removed soon in order for it to be restored.
You may remember that last year St. Andrews Civic Trust acquired the historic 1833 Lighthouse. thier first priority was to move the old LH back off the wharf as it was in danger of collapse. this was done safely and its sitting in a temporary location next to the Lighthouse Restaurant close to where it was before.

Now the nest priority is evaluation and restoration of the cuppola or lantern room which is the part of the LH that is in the worst shape. It will be removed this week (May 18-24th) by using the boom truck courtesy of Jail Island Salmon. L & B industrial will transport the lantern room to the nearby Community College so it can be studied in more detail before restoration will be attempted. The welding dept. of the College will be helping out in the restoration effort after a careful study is made to determine the best course of action to save the cast iron lantern room.

A temporary custom made tarp, donated by David and Marjorie Martin of F'ton, will be placed over the top of the wooden LH structure to protect it from the elements. Its unknown how long the old cuppola will be off the LH, but that all depends on restoration, it could be a year or less depending on many variables like restoration money, expertise, materials needed, etc.

Pendlebury Seawall Washed Partly Away

In a recent storm part of the seawall next to the Lighthouse Restaurant was washed away. This section of seawall washed out in a Nor'easter in October. Thankfully the Pendlebury lighthouse was moved this summer back off the wharf onto dry land closeby. The lighthouse is still exposed but its somewhat safer in its temporary location next to the restaurant and in back of a more secure section of seawall.

New Pendlebury Photos/Update

Some new recent photos of the lantern room at the Pendlebury Lighthouse in St. Andrews. According to Alanna Baird, the cuppola is made of wrought and not cast iron. The eight wrought iron sides of the room appear to far gone to restore and will have to be replaced. The roof appears to be salvageable. The lantern room is scheduled to be removed from the lighthouse sometime soon in order for it to be restored at the St. Andrews Community College over the winter months. Some detailed photos/measurements of the cuppola have to be taken by an architect as well. The rest of the structure will be winterized.
Also discovered during this preliminary survey of the cuppola was that there was a skinnier and smaller lantern room on top of the skinny neck than what is currently exposed. It appears originally that that the lighthouse had a smaller lantern room, a larger one was added over the small older one sometime in the past.
Thanks to St.. Andrews Civic Trust for the update on their lighthouse restoration project.

Pendlebury Update

The move to save the old St. Andrews Lighthouse, aka Pendlebury, is moving steadily ahead. In an interview on CBC Radio today, Alanna Baird of St. Andrews Civic Trust told host Gary Mittelholtz that the first priority with saving the old lighthouse is to move it by crane to a safer location 50 feet away on dry land. This would be a temporary move until the old wharf if was sitting on is repaired. Currently any bad storm could take out the wharf causing the lighthouse to tip over. After the wharf is rebuilt the old lantern room is next on the list of repairs, the light tower itself is in relatively good condition.
The Cuppola, or Lantern Room, basically has to be rebuilt from scratch going by old photos and drawings. The Trust wants to restore the lighthouse to its former glory within the next few years and open it to the public. They are open to suggestions on what to do with the old lighthouse once its fixed up, submit your ideas/suggestions to the below e-mail address.

The lighthouse is currently privately owned but it is expected to be purchased by Civic Trust sometime soon, the current owners want to sell the old light and help get it back to its former glory.
A fundraiser is slated to take place on August 30th at the Sunbury Shores Art Gallery in St. Andrews to help raise funds for the restoration and rebuilding effort. They need $200,000 to do the complete restoration, the wharf resotation is the top priority though. They are calling on artists to donate their works to this art exhibition whereby the money will go towards restoring the lighthouse.
This lighthouse is the 3rd oldest in New Brunswick and the oldest surviving mainland lighthouse having been built in 1833. The Head Harbour lightstation is the oldest in New Brunswick having been built in 1829, Gannet Rock is next having been built in 1831 and St. Andrews is next, built in 1833. Once there was 8 other lighthouses in the area from the St. Croix River to Midjik Bluff, only the St. Andrews Light remains.

If you want to help save the historic St. Andrews Light please contact Alanna Baird at: alannam@nbnet.nb.ca or (506)529-8197
