It was demolished by DOT because of a safety problem with the construction of the new 4 lane highway going down to Saint John, Route 1. The remains of the bridge including the cables and two steel support frames are reportedly in storage at a gov't garage in Sussex. This was a sad loss for the community, hopefully thier 17 plus covered bridges in the county don't meet a similar fate! Footbridge Now Gone [Posted on 10.28.2002] According to Sussex's King County Record newspaper, the Dept. of Transportation demolished this 22 year old suspension footbridge before the new 4 lane highway was completed. They cited safety and environmental issues, mainly because people would have to cross 4 lanes of busy traffic instead of the previous two lanes. The environmental aspect has to do with the old bridge abutements that go out into the river. The gov't feels it will cause less flooding if they are removed.
