The cupola(lantern room) on the Pendlebury LH has now been removed.
After about a month's delay the lantern room on the old Pendlebury LH has finally been removed in order for it's restoration to proceed. It was removed on July 23rd, during foggy weather, by the Cards Aquanet boom truck from St. George. The one originally offered by Jail Island Salmon couldn't do it because the reach of the boom wasn't quite long enough to reach. Mike LeBlanc of L&B Mechanical supervised the removal of the cupola. the job went without a hitch. The tower is presently uncovered but will be soon once a few more pieces of metal are removed from the top of the tower.
It was transported up the street to NBCC where the welding department has volunteered to help restore this piece of the lighthouse. Before any work is done though there will be a through evaluation of the cupola's wrought iron to see what is salvageable and what needs to be re-built or fabricated. The wooden base of the LH will be securely covered with a tarp at the top to protect it from the elements until the base and tower are back together again. Its expected the restoration of the cupola will take the better part of a year to complete. This all depends on what exactly needs to be done to fix and restore. The wooden portion of the LH is in generally good shape although the old wharf where the LH once stood still needs to be rebuilt. Its unknown when this re-construction will occur but hopefully soon.
Thanks to Alanna Baird for the update.
